Ankle swelling

Swelling in the ankles and feet, particularly ankle swelling, is a common condition that affects many people.

Medically referred to as edema, ankle swelling or swollen ankles and feet is caused by a build up of fluid which may subsequently lead to lower leg pain.

Edema can affect any part of the body; however it is most common in the feet, ankles and lower legs causing ankle swelling.

There are many causes of ankle swelling, swollen ankles and swollen feet including:

  • Poor circulation causing ankle swelling
  • Being overweight or obese leading to ankle swelling
  • Sitting still or standing for long periods of time resulting in ankle swelling
  • Medication that may cause side effects such as ankle swelling
  • Pregnancy where changes in hormones lead to ankle swelling

How does ankle swelling occur?

Ankle swelling from poor circulation results in a reduced blood supply to the ankles and feet, causing swelling around the joints, leg pain and discomfort when moving and hence ankle swelling. Poor circulation leading to ankle swelling is caused by the narrowing of the arteries and veins, the blood vessels that transport blood round the body. Poor circulation can also lead to not only ankle swelling, but the development of ulcers and contribute to pain associated with gout as well as ankle swelling.

Ulcers develop due to poor circulation, such as where there is ankle swelling, as ulcers form when cuts and wounds take a long time to heal due to a lack of blood supply around ankle swelling. Ulcers can develop into very serious issues if left untreated.

Gout is a condition that affects the hands and feet, and one that is compounded by poor circulation such as that caused by ankle swelling. Gout – associate with a diet rich in acidity – can lead to intense pain in the fingers and toes. Poor circulation reduces the blood supply to the hands, ankles and feet. Ankle swelling will further reduce circulation.

This reduced blood supply, exacerbated by ankle swelling, means that waste products are not removed efficiently from these areas and can intensify gout pain and also increase ankle swelling.

Electro Magnetic Stimulation (EMS) has been proven to enhance blood circulation, reducing the symptoms of many conditions including:

  • Leg pain especially with ankle swelling
  • Gout and circualtion problems with ankle swelling
  • Ulcers in areas of ankle swelling
  • Swollen ankles and feet or ankle swelling
  • Arthritis near ankle swelling
  • Cold hands and feet
